ONE BIG IDEA!: Ashoka award for young social entrepreneurs

Ashoka Nepal awarded the second batch participants of The Ashoka Forum for Young Social Entrepreneurs (AFYSE) on Tuesday at the Yala Maya Kendra in Patan.
The successful interns from the four-week internships were invited to join the AFYSE Alumni Club at the graduation ceremony. The new graduates and members are Sujita Shrestha, Deepesh Raj Sharma, Gunjan Gautam and Saurav Dhakal.
Those who were awarded with the membership to the Alumni Club and Ashoka's network had the necessary qualities in realizing their innovative ideas in order to bring about the change in the society.
Deepesh Raj Shrestha has a creative idea in disposal of solid wastes in an efficient manner. His model has already been implemented in his home town of Bhaktapur and he is all geared to imply his vision throughout Nepal.
“Ashoka Nepal gave me confidence and necessary networks that indeed would help me in my endeavors of garbage disposal,” Shrestha expressed his gratitude.
Saurav Dhakal's vision is to digitize the general classrooms so as to improve the teaching environment by introducing media technology to the young people. His “Educational Interactive Video Production (EIVP)” aims to complement and support the courses of social studies, environmental science and other curriculum.
He is currently developing interactive videos of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu — “Fascinating Kathmandu”, on national parks and natural resources in Nepal — “Nature Walk” and about reproductive health and sex education “Talk to me”.
Sujita Shrestha's idea “Career CafĂ© (CC)” is to form a youth network to make the youths aware of the problems that the country is facing. The main objective of the CC is to utilize the unused talent and potential of the youths by bridging them through friend-circle, youth clubs, youth forums and emails.
Another graduate, Rabin Maharjan aims to establish an information center in his locality which in his words will help youths to collect information about the events and problems happening in their localities.
Likewise, Gunjan Gautam aims to emphasize on high probability of profit in Micro-Hydro Programs (MHP). He wants to set up a network of local MHP promoters and manage the productive uses of the program.
Ashoka Nepal, a non-profit global organization supports the social entrepreneurs to realize and replicate their innovative ideas. AFYSE is a part of this global organization that provides a platform for young people aged 18 - 30.

Black spider

The Special cell of the Delhi Police has arrested an international gangster from Ranjeet Nagar in west Delhi on Wednesday night. The police said that Milan Lama's name had become synonymous with terror for several businessmen in northern India who were receiving threat calls from the gangster. Delhi Police had declar

ed a reward of Rs 50,000 on him.
"We arrested Lama from a public booth in Ranjeet Nagar where he had gone to make a call. He came to Delhi a few days ago and was living in Majnu ka Tila," said Alok Kumar, DCP (Special Cell). Lama started off as a regular gambler and was a frequent at casinos in Nepal. When he fell short of money he formed a gang with five other school friends. The group started working under the name of "International Black Spider Group." They started threatening affluent doctors, hospital owners and businessmen both in India and Nepal.
While Lama made threat calls to businessmen from public booths, his other associates Sudhir Thapa, Ganesh Kharki, Akash Kedar, Ganesh Lama and Santosh collected the money from their targets. In March this year the accused had made an extortion call to a businessman from Nepal and demanded Rs 1 crore from him. On Wednesday night a team led by ACP LN Rao and Inspector Hridaya Bhushan arrested the accused when he had gone to a public telephone booth in Patel Nagar to make an extortion call. The police also recovered a pistol and five cartridges from the possession of the accused.
